Summer Fun!
Summer has finally arrived in the
Northwest and we have our summer bloomers on! Enjoy a leisurely
day by taking a stroll through the nursery. Foliage and flowers
abound in the landscape, hanging baskets, and in planters and pots! Consider
creating a
colorfully planted pot of your own!
Ask us for advice, we’d
be happy to share suggestions.
Bring
the kids!
They’ll enjoy watching our doves, looking
for fish in our water plant ponds, or petting our resident
cat, Lottie!.
- Please Remember – Plants and pets can suffer if
left in a hot car! Plants should not be left in a trunk
for more than an hour. Obviously pets should be protected
from the oven-like effects of the car in summer. Windows
should be partially open, water provided, and the time
limited.
-

In
stock now: top quality
ceramic pottery from Asia! These pots are handmade and come
in dozens of shapes and colors. They are fired at high temperatures
with a crack-resistant glaze so they will survive freezing
winter temperatures! (adequate drainage is necessary)
Gardening Calendar:
- Water! The heat of summer
is the most crucial time of year to help your landscape
stay
hydrated! This is absolutely essential for anything planted
since last
summer, but even your established plantings will greatly benefit from a little
additional water. Watering in the early morning or in the evening is ideal.
Consider mulching with compost or bark mulch to help hold moisture in the
ground.
- Rhododendrons always look
best when spent blooms are “dead-headed”. "Rhodies" set
their buds in summer for the next spring bloom cycle. Now is the time to
fertilize and water them for a great floral display next
year.
- Regarding hanging baskets
and planted containers…Water
regularly, fertilize occasionally. Use a water soluble balanced fertilizer
such as Peters or Miracle
grow half strength every time you water.
- Relax in your
garden with a cool drink and
enjoy your plants and the beautiful songs of the Whidbey Island birds!
Did You Know . . . ?
Plants take in harmful carbon dioxide from the air and convert
it to oxygen? So planting is good for the environment. For
every tree we plant, it will “breathe
in” approximately 1,600 lbs of CO2 emissions over its lifetime. Trees also
provide a sustainable habitat for wildlife.

Plant of the Month:
Hydrangea: Hydrangeas are excellent shrubs for the summertime. Whether on your
deck in a container or in the landscape, hydrangeas provide long-lasting blooms
against a backdrop of lush foliage.
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’ An outstanding
and award-winning new Pee-gee hydrangea which boasts large
flowers that start chartreuse, then become white, and finally
age to pink. Very strong stems hold flowers upright without
flopping!
Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’
Huge white flowers the size of a basketball cover this shrub
year after year, even if pruned back in late winter! The
flowers start out chartreuse, then age to white. This hydrangea
needs a shadier location and summer water.
